Biography

Edmund was born about 1603 in England. His name has been alternatively spelled "Edmond".

From hand-written register of marriages at St. Gregory by St. Paul Parish, City of London: Edmund Needham married Joan Leazing on April 7, 1629.[1] Marriage by license...[2]

Their first child Mary was baptized about 10 months later in 1630 (using old dates).

He died in Lynn, Essex, Massachusetts Bay in 1677. [3]

Edmund was in Lynn in 1639, and was a grantee of Southampton, L.I. in 1640, but Savage thinks that he never went there to live. A servant of Edmund was called to court in Lynn in 1647.

His will was written on April 26th 1677 and proved April 29, 1677. He mentioned the children of Joseph Mansfield (husband of his daughter, Elizabeth)

His wife's name has been spelled in several different ways, but it is the same person. She has been known as Joan/Joane/Jane Unknown/Leasing/Leazing. Based upon records found and preponderance of other sources, I believe the correct name to be Joane Leazing. (see Photo)

Dear Ken P and S Hill, I apologize for my initial comment about Edmond Needham's date of birth and first 2 daughters being twins. I can't recall my source for this, and at the time I assumed it was from Robert Clemons' document. However, he lists the DOB as "about 1606 in London, England." He lists their first child as unknown and second is Mary Needham, "born about 1630 in London, England." The only other discrepancy is that Hannah was not born after Daniel. The 8th child was Ezekiel, "born May 1644 in Lynn, Mass", followed by Hannah, "about 1649 in Lynn, Mass." The other sources he lists that are relevant to the first 5 generations are as follows:

Joseph S. Stevenson, Ancestors of William Alexander Needham, Family Tree Maker User Home Pages. Our Needham and Bagley Kin by Melva Breffeilh. Norwich, CT Vital Records, 1659-1848. Needham Family Cemetary in Hardin Co, Kentucky. Location is described. Find A Grave Memorial. My 90 yr old father's name is William Alexander Needham Severance, named after his grandfather. Robert Clemons includes some interesting stories about people's lives. So let me know if you're interested. I can possibly scan some of this to you via email. FYI, my Needham lineage is 1st gen John/Mary Howe, 2nd gen Edmond/Joane Leazing, 3rd gen Daniel/Ruth Chadwell, 4th gen Daniel/Mary Parkman, 5th gen Daniel/Isabella Armstrong, 6th gen Elias/Mercy Stocking, who relocated to KY, 7th gen Timothy Stocking Needham/Ruth Ellen Smith, 8th gen Parkman Smith Needham/Rebecca Sandusky South, 9th gen John William Needham/Margaret Souter Smith, 10th gen William Alexander Needham/Alice Rosella Brown, 11th gen Catherine Needham/Lyle Severance, 12th gen my parents. We got a recent email from Robert Clemons, so I have a way to reach him and I can ask questions about sources. He's in assisted living with his wife.

Sorry, the info below is not well sourced. Robert Clemons, whose wife Emily is a Needham descendent, compiled a 41 page document, Descendants of John Needham, which begins with John Needham, born about 1575 in Hempstead, Middlesex, England (Clemons lists John as the first of 10 generations in his document.) His son Edmund was born about 1606 in London, and died 16 May, 1677, in Lynn, MA, (British Colonial America). Edmund Married Joan Leazing 7th April, 1629, in St Gregory church, London. One source of Clemons' notes about the Needhams is 13 volumes by Thomas Ashley Needham, Manchester, who traced them to Christopher Needham, son of Orwell, who married a cousin of William the Conqueror and came to England with him. Christopher was knighted by William the Conqueror. Clemons cites v42t1736.ftw, Date of Import 30 June, 2005 ( I don't know what this means), and "Genealogical Gleanings in England by Henry T. Wyters, 1969". The latter includes the will of Mary Needham of Hampstead, County of Middlesex, England, dated 12 April, 1660. She bequeathed 200 pounds of lawful money to her "son Edmond, resident in New England, and if he were not living, to his son Daniel Needham." Also mentioned were her sons John, Benjamin, her daughters Katherine, Elizabeth, (all Needhams), Ann Needham Cole, and her sons in law Thomas Barnes and John Brent. I'll comment with his other sources soon.

Is the material above by Robert Clemons available anywhere? I am curious if it cites any sources for its material? A .ftw file is an electronic file, which could be a GEDCOM; but the name itself is only a file name - not a source.

I forgot to mention that after Elizabeth's death, they named a subsequent daughter Elizabeth.

My Grandmother was Catherine Needham, a fraternal twin of Marguerite. Her branch of the family did some genealogy research. The family records cite Edmund Needham's birth as January 6, 1599, in Lydbury, North Shropshire, England. He and his wife Joan Leazing's first birth appears to have been twin girls, Elizabeth and Mary in about Jan 21, 1629. By the time they left England for The Massachusetts Bay Colony, Elizabeth and a third daughter, Abigail, had died. Daniel Leazing Needham was the last child born November 11, 1638, in St. Gregory, Ludgate, greater London. The next birth, Hannah, around 1642, was in Essex, Mass. I don't have the sources at my fingertips, but I can look them up if anyone's interested.

That sounds very intriguing, Ellen. I would be interested in seeing them, and possibly including them in some manner on his profile.

Same here! Definitely some differences need to be worked out.

Needham-483 and Needham-88 appear to represent the same person because: The share the same information, date of death, etc. There are multiple children also beyond what is shown
